6-Week Red Wine Kits

Red Wines

Red wines are just as their name says; red. They can be purple red, pale brick red, ruby red, but they’re all red. Red wines are made from grapes that are red or bluish but are often referred to by winemakers as black grapes. The red colour occurs when the juice sits in contact with the red grape skins during fermentation and absorbs the skins color. Along with the red colour the skins give the wine a substance called tannin. Tannin is the most important difference between red and white wines. Red grapes are very different from one another which accounts for the many varieties of styles of red wine. The ability to adjust the tannin in red wines allows winemakers to produce: Light-bodied, fruity red wines with not much tannin like Beaujolais and Valpolicella. Medium-bodied, moderately tannic red wines like a Merlot or Chianti. Full-bodied, tannic reds such as the best Bordeaux wines, the most expensive California Cabernets and the Barolo’s and Super Tuscan’s from Italy.
